Meeting with Msgr. Ravelli, Master of Papal Liturgical Celebrations

Fourth meeting of the General Congress of the Department for 2024

15 May 2024

On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, the fourth meeting of the General Congress of the Dicastery was held in the Conference Hall, hosted by H.E.R. Msgr. Diego Ravelli, head of the Office of Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff, who spoke about his work and presented his office in detail, highlighting from the outset the importance of collaboration and inter-connection with the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, of which he is one of the Consultors.

The Office for Liturgical Celebrations is in charge of the organization and conduct of liturgical celebrations presided over by the Holy Father and is responsible for ensuring that the celebrations follow the liturgical norms established by the Church, maintaining the unity and sacredness of the rites.

His function is crucial in ensuring that celebrations are conducted in accordance with the tradition and doctrine of the Church, preserving the sacredness and meaning of liturgical practices, a job that requires detailed planning and continuous contact with other Vatican offices and agencies.

Archbishop Ravelli then outlined the changes that took place with the transition from Pastor Bonus to Praedicate Evangelium, stressing the importance of adapting language to the liturgy and valuing local particularities without compromising their validity.

He also mentioned the role of the Master of Celebrations and the office's responsibility over the Pontifical Musical Chapel, the historical archive of ceremonial diaries, and the lipsanoteca, which preserves the reliquaries and relics of the saints.
