Ad Limina Visit of the Episcopal Conference of Hong Kong and Macao

16 June 2026

On the occasion of the ad limina Apostolorum Visit of the Episcopal Conference of Macao and Hong Kong, held on 16 June 2026, several topics of particular importance for liturgical and ecclesial life were addressed. Among these, specific attention was given to the ongoing work on the new translation of the Missal, highlighting the importance of the sacramental formulas and their particular process of approval, as well as the current status of the liturgical books prepared ad usum of the Episcopal Conference.

Attention was also drawn to the need to safeguard the authenticity of the Eucharistic celebration, avoiding any form of exploitation by groups that risk turning it into an expression of socio-political identities or claims, rather than the saving mystery of Christ who died and rose again. In this regard, the importance of remaining faithful to the path indicated by the Second Vatican Council and the papal Magisterium was reaffirmed.

A further area of reflection concerned the contribution of theology to the process of discernment and to decision-making regarding liturgical adaptations entrusted to the Episcopal Conferences. In particular, the need to apply the principle of communion and peace was emphasized, in order to avoid scandal, disruptions, and divisions within ecclesial life.

Finally, the importance of a clear definition of the role of the catechist was highlighted, also in view of possible adaptations of the rite of institution, so as to foster a more adequate understanding and appreciation of this ministry in the local Church.
