Discussion of the Liturgical translations in the Tetum language (Timor-Leste)

The Liturgy Commission of the Episcopal Conference of Timor-Leste recently held a productive meeting with the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments to discuss the translation of liturgical texts into Tetum, the country's official liturgical language. The meeting focused on several key aspects, including the completion of the translation into Tetum, the creation of a specific Liturgical Calendar for Timor-Leste, and the approval of previously unapproved sacramental books.

During the first day, the Commission presented translations of various key texts, including the Order of the Mass, Baptism of Children, Christian Initiation of Adults, Confirmation, Celebration of Marriage, and Ordination. The discussions centered on completing the translation into Tetum, including rubrics currently in Portuguese, and addressing the challenges encountered during the translation process.

On the second day, the Commission presented a report on their work and the challenges they faced. The Dicastery provided an overview of previous approvals obtained for liturgical texts in Tetum. The discussions then focused on the Order of the Mass, analyzing specific points such as sacramental formulas, modifications made during the translation, consistency in numbering and inclusion of Latin originals, missing or optional elements, and Prefaces.

The Dicastery also provided guidance on creating a Particular Calendar for Timor-Leste, including translations of saints' names. The next steps planned by the Commission include preparing detailed explanations for the changes made to the sacramental formulas, continuing discussions on the Order of the Mass and the Order of Ordination, and receiving additional models for Sacramental Formulas and resources in Latin.

The meeting was significant in guiding the Liturgy Commission of Timor-Leste in finalizing Tetum translations and obtaining Vatican approval for liturgical books in use in the country.
